'Contrarian takes I think' a list of games by AiriBan | Backloggd (2024)

Trying to not make this a "I don't like x popular game xd" list because those are dumb. Just random takes that I think would generally be seen as contrary to the masses or something. Probably better named "hot takes" list but idrc. What anime opinion has you like this Swords pointing at that one guy from tangled

Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland DX

World endings stakes suck HARD. Very seldom in games they're handled well and only serve to make me far less interested in the main story. Small, more personal stakes almost always work out so much better. Atelier Rorona is here because the only real stakes here are Rorona losing her house if she can't become a good alchemist and that had me more engaged than any "world ending stakes".

Rance Quest Magnum

You can have the most abysmal dogsh*t gameplay ever and I will not care at all as long as the story is good.

Dark Souls

Arbitrary weapon upgrade systems are a f*cking plague and only serve to not allow the player to experiment. Literally what point is there in the smithing stone system aside from stopping experimentation. Boring ass design philosophy. Really upsetting that so many games thought this was a great system and now you see it literally everywhere. Soulslike design philosophy in general is a blight on gaming lol.

Dark Souls III

Please stop making the way you dodge attacks just spamming the i-frame button. I like dodging attacks intuitively in action games, not "press da iframes button when yr abt to get hit". A lot of Platinum Games are also guilty of this.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

Aggressively anti-player design is a-ok in my book as long as it's funny. Strange Journey dungeon design is exactly this.

Rain World

Anti-player gameplay to sell a story or setting is dumb and cring tho. I also really dislike when people try to call "bad gameplay" intentional and actually good when it's clearly not intentional, this part really doesn't apply to Rain World because its design is clearly intentional and morso is towards games like Persona 3 & Drake and Gard.

Dohna Dohna: Let's Do Bad Things Together!

Crazy good art can carry an otherwise w/e game. Gyoukai may be the best ever.

Robot Alchemic Drive

"Janky" games are f*cking badass and the masses always get assmad over it. Grow up. I could put like 30 different games here but Robot Alchemic Drive deserves more recognition.

Spec Ops: The Line

Gamers are f*cking retarded for getting mad at "games forcing you to do bad things" stop self inserting on protagonists that you obviously shouldn't you f*cking weirdos. Let stories do cool things without bitching about playing as a terrible person because you decided to self insert on the white dude with a hero complex shooting brown people.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Say what you will about Skyrim's gameplay & combat this game is easily one of the best implementations of the open world concept. You can kinda just go anywhere and immediately be hit with 50 things to do, I really wish other open world games would follow suit. People that say you need mods to make this game playable are also weird.

Undertale

"Meta narrative 4th wall break" media is usually corny as f*ck and implemented in uninteresting ways. You got to put in a lot of footwork to make a meta narrative interesting and few games actually make that work. Undertale is here because biggest complaint about it is the meta-narrative aspects of it being corny.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Half of your game being cutscenes is badass

Kingdom Hearts II

Maybe having half of your game be cutscenes is actually not that badass

Final Fantasy XIII

I generally like linearity a lot more in story-centric games. I'm always taken out of a story when I do like 30 side things before going back to the main story.

Xenoblade Chronicles

A lot of RPGs have this annoying problem of having a big cast where absolutely nobody outside of the main character gets decent characterization. It's a LOT harder to care about your story if I don't give a f*ck about the characters.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II

reading the wiki instead of actually playing the game is justified sometimes. I genuinely believe people would be better off reading the wiki for the entirety of Cold Steel and Kuro 2 lmao.

Rance 5D: The Lonely Girl

rance 5d is good you guys are just mean

Hollow Knight

Mass appeal artstyle and design is boring as f*ck. We should replace all games that look like this with moe anime games that'll show the masses.

God Eater 2

I have yet to see a game that obviously copies a popular game's design philosophy turn out better than said popular game that was copied. Monster Hunter-likes are the biggest case of this because they all suck balls while Monster Hunter is like the coolest series ever. I think game devs should be more original (controversial).

Fortnite

fork knife is rly funne

Risk of Rain 2

I think gamers should be more willing to use cheats. Be it using cheatengine to basically circumvent sh*tty gameplay or using it to avoid annoying systems. Risk of Rain 2 is here bc I used an "unlock everything" text file thing bc i could not be assed to do it myself and couldn't really think of any other examples. Oh playing on easier difficulties is also a way to avoid annoying gameplay. U have nothing to prove my friend, you're a true elite gammer in my heart.

Omori

Tryhard quirkiness is the worst trend in video games ever.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul

I think David Cage should be publicly executed

i have a couple points of disagreement:

1. i think games like persona 3 and drakengard get too largely represented by the pseud "bad on purpose" crowd. i wouldn't call either bad games. p3's gameplay loop is very engaging to me and i think drakengard would have a wildly different reputation if everyone who played it today didn't see ending E as a requirement. or if they just used a save file to get all the weapons. drakengard's a totally fine, cool-as-f*ck musou if that's how you play it. it's only "bad on purpose" if you aim to get the final ending, which is literally a player-mocking troll from yoko taro

2. reading a wiki is fine if you don't profess your opinion on a story like you know what you're talking about. anyone could read a two paragraph summary of umineko and say "uhh sounds dumb" but anyone who sincerely thinks they've got the full picture of a 100+ hour narrative after that is badly damaged somewhere above their neck. but like, if someone wants to read up on the plot of kh, fine - just don't talk about it afterward lmao

3. do people really get upset about doing bad things as player characters that often? i've seen the dumb "i don't wanna be a cop" argument towards armored core for example but i feel that's a subset of a subset. i've more so seen spec ops ragged on for being a shallow take on those kinds of things (not that i can agree or disagree one way or another since i haven't played it)

4. rance 5d is nice :)

I really don't think Dark Souls weapon upgrading is "arbitrary" its a system designed along with its RPG leveling to heavily gate your damage for parts of the game when you technically Could just infinitely farm souls before you get access to appropriate upgrade materials.

I do agree it sucks on experimenting and im happy that ER showers you with materials and even though I dont like the long length, it works for respeccing multiple times a playthrough. It works for RPG leaning action games, and it does really suck for any game that is just a normal action game.

Also, that David Cage one isnt a hot take i dont think

i can't wait to read all these awesome takes from the user whose discord name is "ieatlolis" and who retweets art of sexualized little girls on their public twitter page

@chandler
1. Idk where the disagreement comes from when that's basically what I'm saying lol, I might've worded it poorly but yeah I completely agree that people who say they're purposefully bad are full of sh*t most of the time.

2. Also agree here, while I think it's fine for people to read the wiki, watch video summaries, etc of games they'd really rather not play but it's always really weird for them to have any strong opinion on said story. I weirdly often see people have strong opinions on something and then immediately after say that they've only watched a video essay on said thing.

3. It's pretty common from what I've seen yeah, especially for things like TLOU2 and Spec Ops. I recall people constantly repeating something along the lines of "video game forces you to do bad thing and then goes 'ooooooo don't you feel bad for doing that ooooo'" which doesn't really occur in either game and is just a symptom of projecting onto the main character. Maybe it's not common anymore but I recall seeing that sentiment a LOT with these games.

4. yr one of the good ones...

@Snigglegros That's a fair sentiment to have yeah, as someone who likes to f*ck around with different builds a LOT it's just something that really irks me, I wanna play with all this sh*t! Yet I can't due to being gated by upgrades and whatnot.

@theia wtf we should cancel this guy

I agree mostly on spec ops the line, I need to replay it at some point, I'm very used to movies having stories like that (come and see for example).

chandler

ah yeah agreed on point 1 then. i'll change my point of disagreement to the fact that i like world ending stakes !! !!! though i do feel they're not often done justice, i always love it especially when sh*t gets REALLY unexpectedly f*cked up. sonic adventure totally nails this in its endgame for example

i also didn't notice the kh2 entry - i love that game's story but i definitely agree there's a certain sorta elegance to kh1 that's never been replicated

chandler

oh yeah and in the case of tlou2 i feel a lot of that stuff people were bitching about especially during pre-release was just super f*cking misogynistic above anything else

Apocynadeae

i would switch the entries for mgs3 and kh2, personally :)

AiriBan

@chandler Lol yeah, world ending stakes are really weird as they're in this spot where they SHOULD be cool as f*ck but oftentimes they're just shoehorned in with no prior buildup, leading to unimpactful stakes and a disconnect from the main story. Also people are just really weird about TLOU2 pre and post release (at least the badly drawn memes are REALLY funny).

@Apocynadeae The KH2 entry is half joke half not tbh. I'm replaying it right now and have been complaining a LOT in VCs about how most of the Disney Worlds may as well be all cutscene no gameplay (there are segments where you'll get like 6+ cutscenes in a row with no gameplay outside of moving screens lol). Most of these are also not that fun and just repeats of the main plots of the world you're currently in, which is weird considering KH1 & 3 aren't too bad w/ that. I adore the main plot of KH2 tho don't get me wrong. sh*t's awesome. Org 13 is like the coolest group ever.

Apocynadeae

oh yeah i definetly think if i ever revisit kh2 (well, more when) i'll probably have a more educated angle on the disney worlds. it's definetly less defense on kh2's pacing and more an attack that i don't like mgs3 in a tongue in cheek way

on the world ending stakes aspect though, i agree as long as the grand stakes are the only aspect of it. galleria comes to mind since it does eventually scale to such a degree but the motivation's always much more personal to offset how disconnected it feels to participate in that scenario

AxiomOpus

Persona 5 Peasant has a World Ending stake shoehorned into the plot and I ended up hating that game. Coincidence? I think not!

"Tryhard quirkiness is the worst trend in video games ever." This one goes hard

chandler

yeah kh2's disney worlds are a massive step down from 1's (besides timeless river imo). this is also why kh3 is my second favorite game in the series - great worlds that mostly aren't just movie rehashes

imsh*tting420

i agree with skyrim, haters gonna hate. skyrim taste so good when u aint got a bitch in ya ear telling u it aint

but, if every game was replaced with moe anime i would f*cking lose my sh*t and erupt the world with volcanoes
