China have taken high speed transport to the next level. They basically have blown Tesla up in a controlled explosion, taken what was left of an amazing concept, and developed it into an actual technology that is currently being tested in Northern China. The new Maglev features incredible vacuum technology that produces a truly unimaginable speed. The new base for testing has produced promising results on initial tests. The Chinese government has invested heavily in public transport in the past few decades following the countries unprecedented financial growth.
Is this the end for Tesla? How does the new train change public transport?
Up until Elon Musk was appointed as a Special Government Employee, Tesla was the leader in innovation that pushed the limits of what was technically possible. So the latest test to come out of China has the world looking at Tesla like an old relic of yesteryear. The technology being tested in northern China has the potential to change commuter transport for future generations to come.
Back in the 80’s, the majority of the Chinese public could not even afford a bicycle. In the past few decades, China has experienced a financial boom unlike anything seen in history. The Chinese economy is the largest in the world and the technology found in everyday life is simply astounding. From incredible architecture to facial recognition linking citizens to a credit score, China is decades ahead of the rest of the world.
What makes the new Maglev truly amazing is the technology and the environment needed to make it work. The corporation responsible for developing the train is a government entity, so the funds and resources are abundant. The engineers are still in the testing phase and have looked at 2032 for a possible implementation of the technology on China’s rails.
What makes the speed and technology so innovative?
The train uses a system that creates a vacuum and allows for incredible speeds on magnetic rails. With a top speed of 1000 kph or 621 pmh, the train can revolutionise high speed transport forever. The train also feature an upgrades version of the 5g communications system currently being used on China’s high speed trains. The innovation coming out of the Asian giant is amazing.
That was one of the more serious problems. How to maintain communications at such a high speed. The solution was to run a cable along the vacuum tube that emits an electromagnetic signal. This eliminates any loss of signal due to the signal frequency shifting constantly. The tests took place in a long vacuum tube that allowed for the right environment for the incredible speed.
What makes the development even more interesting is the fact that the results were nearly exactly what the engineers were expecting. This suggests that China really know what they are doing. Their amazing pace of innovation has cemented their reputation as the country to go to for a view of where the technology of the world is headed.
Is this technology going to find its way to the rest of the world?
While the innovation and practical application of the concept is impressive, it must be noted that the first person to actually put money into this was Elon Musk. Proposing high speed rail network that could completely remove cars from cities. But Tesla gave up on the idea. So the Chinese have taken the idea and ran with it. With their recent investment that is aimed at competing with Tesla, and this new high speed train, China has sent out a message to the world. That no matter the political climate, they are always going to push innovation.
